Focus on cards, not other players. This is typical strategy for Omaha Hi poker, the game that mostly resembles Texas Hold’em. This game is also available at poker sites for iPad. The same hand rankings, the same aim to win. However, this time four hole cards are dealt. But you can use ONLY TWO cards to make the final hand.
What’s the catch? With four hole cards, Omaha Hi Poker is a nine-card game. The more cards you have to choose from, the stronger hands you will finish with. Thus, poker players usually tend to stay longer with the pots growing to make the game more hazardous.
Basic Rules to Start
Mark the dealer with a disk called button. This button rotates to the left for each hand. The players are defined clockwise around the table starting with the dealer. With button rotating to mark the dealer during each hand influences greatly the opportunities of every player.
- Four cards are dealt to each player.
- Other five are open and dealt in the middle of the table to be shared by all players.
- You can use two of your four hole cards and three of the five community cards to make your final hand.
The Open
The game starts with the first player to the dealer’s left – small blind – who must kick in half the lower limit. For example, $5 in a $10-$20 game. Then, big blind – the next player to the left – must kick in the full value of the lower limit. For example, $10 in a $10-$20 game.
Thus, the deal rotates clockwise with the blinds open with their forced bets. The other players can
Call – match the big blind ($10 in our example),
Raise – kick in the big limit ($20 in our example),
Check – calling the current bet of zero is not allowed for this round, so you can
ONLY
Fold – stop playing the hand.
The blinds can Raise, Call and Fold when the betting has returned to them.
The Flop
After the first betting round, the dealer lays out the first three community cards in the centre of the table. It is the flop.
Now you can check (as well as during the rest of the hand). Thus, the betting begins with the blinds or with the next seat of the dealers’ left (if the blinds choose checking). Place bets at the lower limit. It will be $10 for our example.
The Turn
When the forth community card is dealt the betting starts with the blinds. Since this round bets and raises are at the high limit only. $20 in our sample.
The River
The fifth community card is dealt. This is the final. With Bets and Raises allowed at the high limit only it is expensive street too.
The Showdown
The best 5 card hand wins. You can check the poker hand rankings in the image above. You can form your final hand from any combination of three table cards and two of your pocket cards.
